A transparent tax and tip calculator

Tax and Tip Calculator for Clear Totals

This tax and tip calculator separates a receipt's subtotal, tax, tip, total, and equal share. Enter the pre-tax subtotal, tax rate, tip percentage, and group size to see the arithmetic without doing it by hand.

Choose a pre-tax tip base or a subtotal-plus-tax base. The result labels the choice, so everyone can review the same assumption instead of guessing why the total changed.

For a shared meal, enter the number of people and optionally round each share up. The displayed difference keeps a convenient payment amount separate from the exact split.

DEFAULT EXAMPLE
Pre-tax subtotal$50.00
8% tax$4.00
20% tip$10.00
Final total$64.00

Use this calculator for

  • A restaurant bill with a separate subtotal, tax rate, and tip.
  • A tax and tip calculation when you want to compare two tip bases.
  • An equal split for friends, family, coworkers, or a shared order.
  • A rounded per-person amount with the difference shown openly.

How to Use the Tax and Tip Calculator

Use the same order every time: identify the subtotal, make tax explicit, choose the tip base, and then decide how to split the result. This keeps a tax and tip calculator useful for a single diner as well as a larger group.

1

Enter the subtotal

Read the pre-tax subtotal from the receipt and enter it. Leave service charges and existing gratuity out unless you intentionally want them in the calculation.

2

Add the tax rate

Enter the percentage printed on the bill. If your amount already includes tax, use 0% to avoid adding it twice.

3

Choose the tip base

Select pre-tax subtotal or subtotal plus tax. The result label confirms which base is active.

4

Split or round the total

Set the number of people for an equal share. Turn on rounding only after everyone accepts the difference, then copy or reset the result.

How the Tax and Tip Formula Works

The first field is the pre-tax subtotal. Tax is calculated first, then the selected tip base is applied so both methods remain visible.

tax = subtotal × tax rate
tip base = subtotal, or subtotal + tax
tip = tip base × tip rate
total = subtotal + tax + tip
each share = total ÷ people

With a $50 subtotal, 8% tax, and 20% tip on the subtotal, tax is $4.00, tip is $10.00, and the total is $64.00, or $32.00 each for two people. Including tax in the base changes the tip to $10.80 and the total to $64.80.

Should You Calculate Tip Before or After Tax?

There is no universal tip-base rule. Some diners use the pre-tax subtotal; others use the amount after tax. Local custom, service type, and receipt instructions may affect the choice, so this calculator shows the assumption instead of hiding it.

The pre-tax option keeps food or service, tax, and tip separate and is easy to audit. Choose subtotal plus tax when that is the method you want; changing it affects the tip base, not the tax rate.

A calculator setting is not a business rule. Check for automatic gratuity, service fees, or hospitality charges already printed on the bill, and ask the business when the wording is unclear.

What if a gratuity is already included?

Pause when the receipt lists automatic gratuity, a service charge, or an included tip. The calculator can apply a percentage, but it cannot decide whether an existing charge replaces an optional tip.

Context still matters

Where a Tax and Tip Calculator Helps Most

The arithmetic is consistent, but the input and the decision can change by service type. Treat the result as a transparent starting point and read the bill before you pay.

Restaurants and bars

Check for shared dishes, discounts, deposits, or fixed gratuity. An equal split is convenient, but it may not match different orders.

Delivery and takeout

Keep delivery fees, platform charges, small-order fees, and tip separate. The tool cannot decide which fee a service expects you to tip on.

Salons, taxis, and services

Use a custom percentage when the service context calls for it. A fixed amount may be better than a percentage, so treat the tool as math, not a rulebook.

Avoid common input mistakes

Edge Cases to Check Before You Pay

A correct formula can still produce an unhelpful answer when the receipt is entered incorrectly. These checks cover the most common boundary cases for a tax and tip calculator.

Tax is already included

If your amount is already a tax-included total, do not add the receipt's rate again. Use a separate subtotal when possible, or set tax to 0% and treat the result as an estimate.

The tip is zero or custom

A 0% tip is valid, and custom values can range from 0% to 100%. The tool checks the range but does not judge the choice.

The split does not divide evenly

Cents may not divide evenly. Rounding up simplifies payment, while the displayed difference shows the extra amount collected.

Know the limits

A Clear Calculation Is Not a Universal Tipping Rule

This free calculator shows the inputs, the tax and tip amounts, and the active tip base. It does not give tax advice, verify a restaurant policy, read a receipt, or recommend one percentage for every place or service.

For a reliable estimate, copy the subtotal and rate from the receipt and read the tip-base label before paying. Discounts, multiple rates, mandatory fees, or an uneven split may require separate calculations.

Basic bill values stay in your browser and no account is required. Resetting returns the example, but you should still check the final payment screen and receipt.

Quick answers

Tax and Tip Calculator FAQ

What does a tax and tip calculator calculate?

It calculates tax, tip, total, and equal shares from the subtotal, rates, and group size. You can also choose a pre-tax or tax-inclusive tip base.

How do I calculate a 20% tip with tax?

Enter the subtotal and tax rate, then choose 20%. On $40 with 8% tax, tip is $8.00, tax is $3.20, and the total is $51.20 when tip uses the subtotal.

Should I tip before or after tax?

It depends on local custom, service, and the receipt. Compare both bases and read the active-base label before deciding.

Does this calculator add tax twice if tax is included?

It adds the rate entered. Use 0% when your starting amount already includes tax; otherwise enter the separate pre-tax subtotal and rate.

How do I split a bill with tax and tip?

Enter the subtotal, rates, and number of people. The tool adds tax and tip, then divides the total equally. Use rounding only when everyone accepts the difference.

What if the receipt includes automatic gratuity?

Check for automatic gratuity, service charge, or included tip before adding another percentage. Ask the business if the wording is unclear.

Can I use a custom tip percentage?

Yes. Enter any value from 0% to 100%, including decimals such as 17.5%. Preset buttons do not limit the custom field.

Is this tax and tip calculator free and private?

Yes. It is free, needs no account, and performs the basic arithmetic on your device without sending bill values to a calculation server.
